2004-05 SEASON

STATE PLAYOFF RESULTS

Major defeats Strongsville AA #2 9-2 in Thursday night game
The fishermen rattled off 5 goals by the end of the second period as the Mustangs finally put one in with .25 left in the second to stop the shut-out.  First period scoring started with Ted Clements from Peter Mintun and Keigan Mennetti at 11:46.  Chris Gurreri scored at 2:18 assisted by Peter Noble and Lucas Gsellman.  Ted Clements scored at 9:34 of the 2nd from Blair Wolcott and Cory Stockard.  Michael Lange scored at 5:54 from Jeremy Todd and Peter Mintun.  Keigan Mennetti scored at 1:13 left in the 2nd, from Ted Clements and Jeremy Todd.  After 2 Strongsville goals, Michael Lange scored from Peter Noble and Cory Stockard at 7:54 of the third period.  Peter Noble scored at 4:41 from Blair Wolcott and Steven Epprecht.  Blair Wolcott scored at 2:59 from Peter Noble and Chris Gurreri.  Ted Clements scored at 2:11 from Cory Stockard and Lucas Gsellman to finish 9-2.  CYHO outshot Strongsville 39-19.  Logan Gsellman played in net.

CYHO plays solid defensively but lacks scoring until 3rd period vs. Strongsville #1
Strongsville AA #1 started off early scoring 2 as their BIG line had all 5 goals in the 3-5 loss for the CYHO Fishermen.  CYHO's Michael Lange scored at 5:01 of the first period to bring the game within one assisted by Ted Clements.  CYHO fell behind early in the third period, but came back strong with a couple goals.  Blair Wolcott scored at 6:50 assisted by Jon Deacon and Lucas Gsellman.  Peter Noble scored at 5:18 assisted by Blair Wolcott.  Although the fishermen lost the game, they played with a lot of heart.  For a team of Peewees where very few had played on the same team the previous season their effort and teamwork showed.  Strongsville #1 recently lost the CSHL AA Playoff Championship in triple overtime vs. Parma #1 who were Mid-Am Silver-sticks champions and CSHL League Champions.  The fishermen ended up 1-4 vs. Strongsville #1 on the season, with the sole win coming at the Oct. 8th-10th, Sportsweekend Peewee AA Finals.

CYHO gets good news entering the rink on Saturday Evening
As the fishermen entered the rink for the final game of the Round Robin play before the State Semi-finals, they found themselves still in position to make the Semi's if they won big enough over the Columbus Cardinals 93 Team.  The Cardinals knocked off Strongsville #1 in their morning game.  The coaching staff figured they could wear the Cardinals down in their second 1.5 hour game of the day, especially after Strongsville #1 had been checking them earlier in the day.  Credit to the Cardinals though as they played like the energizer bunny, and seemed to never tire out with only 11 skaters.  CYHO got into penalty trouble and had a few

shorthanded goals against, and players did not play their best defensive game.  Nick Levine scored from Keigan Mennetti and Blair Wolcott scored from Peter Noble for the only 2 CYHO Goals in the 9-2 loss. Logan Gsellman faced 49 shots vs. CYHO shooting 19. The last time the CYHO Major's played the Cardinals was on a Saturday between Sportsweekend games.  The fishermen tied 5-5 in the first 1.5 hour game and won in the second 6-3.  The CYHO Major's would have had to beat the Cardinal's 3-0 on this last meeting to advance to the State Semi-finals.  The Cardinals instead advanced losing the next morning in the Semi-finals vs. North Olmstead #1 3-2.  North Olmstead met Cincinnati Cyclones in the State Finals with Cincinnati winning.  Two positive notes on the games remain.  The CYHO had beaten the Cardinals 93s and North Olmstead each at least once this season.  As the fishermen fell behind and it appeared there was no way to beat the Cardinals by a few goals, all 16 skaters received playing time and valuable experience.

CONGRATULATIONS CLEVELAND HEIGHTS HOCKEY !!
Champions of the Grande Niagara President's Day Tournament

Cleveland Hts. came home the victors after besting team Tri-City from Maryland in the finals 5-2, February 21st.  It would have been nice if we had made the finals (missing by a goal) so that we could have made it an All-Cleveland area final up in New York.

CYHO Major Peewee Rebounds
Better defensive play leads to two wins in a row against Sylvania #1 after loss to Mentor #1 on Saturday.

CYHO AA Major 2-5 vs. Mentor AA #1
Blair Wolcott scored bringing the game within a goal assisted by Greg Oneacre at 3:25 of the second period.  After another Mentor goal, Ted Clements scored at 2:26 of the 3rd period assisted by Blair Wolcott and Jon Deacon.  Mentor went up 4-2 shortly after and finished with an empty netter as Logan Gsellman came to the bench in the last minute of play.  CYHO was outshot 29-23.

CYHO AA Major 4-2 vs. Sylvania AA #1, morning game Chris Gurreri started off the fishermen scoring assisted by Ted Clements and Jeremy Todd at 6:44 of the first period.  After a Sylvania goal, Chris Gurreri scores again at 2:04 of the second period assisted by Peter Noble and Blair Wolcott.  After another Sylvania goal Blair Wolcott scores at 10:22 of the third period from Chris Gurreri and Peter Noble.  Blair Wolcott scores again at 5:57 left in the game assisted by Nick Levine and Peter Noble finishing the game with the 4-2 win.  Each power-play forward finished with 3 points, Noble, Gurreri, and Wolcott.  5 Defensemen stepped up playing a good defensive game, Craig Sherwood, Greg Oneacre, Lucas Gsellman, Michael Yarcusko, and Steven Epprecht.  Logan Gsellman had 29 saves with a solid game in net.

CYHO AA Major 4-2 vs. Sylvania AA #1 in afternoon game
Peter Noble scores to get things started assisted by Blair Wolcott and Nick Levine at 8:07 of the 1st period.  After a Sylvania goal, Ted Clements scores unassisted putting the fishermen up 2-1 at 4:05 of the first period.  Blair Wolcott scores assisted by Peter Noble and Steven Epprecht at 2:09 of the second period.  Nick Levine steals a puck from a Sylvania defensemen and scores unassisted at 12:03 of the 3rd, and Sylvania scores one more in the last minute of play.  Fishermen win 4-2.  Defensmen again stepped up and played well as Cory Stockard joined the 5 mentioned in the morning game.  Logan Gsellman finished well again with 30 shots against.  Wingers backchecked well the entire game.  The fishermen play their last game Wednesday night in Mentor before a minimum of 3 State tournament games.

Strongsville lost the CSHL Peewee AA Championship in the 3rd overtime 4-3 vs. Parma AA #1 on Sunday, March 6th as a few fishermen and parents watched the battle.

FINAL GAMES OF REGULAR SEASON

CYHO Minor shuts out Elyria's top Peewee Team before Elyria enters CSHL Playoffs
At first glance you might say--big deal Elyria is registered A-1, but this is a very skilled team--fast, good passing, defense, and well coached.  Both Elyria teams made the A-1 final 4.  They finished in 2nd and 4th positions.  They knocked out Euclid, who was in the other bracket at Niagara Falls Tournament last weekend.  Euclid recently lost to Cleveland Heights 4-3 and has beaten other AA teams.  I don't like to make predictions, but this Elyria team will most likely do very well in the playoffs.

CYHO Minor Plays One of Best Games in Win vs. Elyria 4-0.
With 12 skaters- 6-93s, 4-92s, and 2-94s!!!
All around team effort kept the Minors moving forward throughout the game.  Strong offense, good passing, smart plays, clearing the zone, excellent hitting, strong defense, good penalty killing, and finally good goaltending solidified the Fishermen win.  Chris Gurreri scored at 7:46 of the first period from Lucas Gsellman.  The score remained 1-0 till the 3rd period.  Chris Gurreri scored again at 11:28 from Keigan Mennetti and Braeden Quast.  Cory Stockard scored banging in a Blair Wolcott shot also assisted by Steven Epprecht at 5:57 of the third period.  Chris Gurreri scores again at 1:26 left from Michael Lange and Steven Epprecht, completing the Hat-Trick.  Epprecht has 2 assists.  Logan Gsellman receives his 8th shut-out of the season.  Logan faced 20 shots vs. the CYHO having 26.  Chad Bednar and Craig Sherwood had a great game on defense as well.  Michael Rudin and Brent Nelson backchecked well the entire game.

The CYHO Peewee Major Team played 8 out of 9 good periods of hockey just missing the finals of the Grande Niagara Presidents Day Tournament
The Stars lined up for Cleveland Heights rather than CYHO on Monday morning as Heights went into their last game with 6 points and CYHO with 5 1/2.  Both teams won all 3 periods of their 3rd game.  Heights won each period 1-0, finishing 3-0 over Chesapeake to move on playing Tri-City who knocked out Hamburg for the other bracket.

CYHO 3-5 vs. Chesapeake Blackhawks
After a 0-0 first period, the Fishermen go up 3-1 in the second.  Greg Oneacre scored assisted by Blair Wolcott and Peter Chris Gurreri.  Peter Noble scored from Michael Lange and Lucas Gsellman.  And Blair Wolcott scored from Nick Levine and Steven Epprecht.  The problem came in the third period as the fishermen allowed one player to score another 3 goals, finishing the game with 4.

CYHO defeats Cleveland Heights 5-3 in second tournament game
The fishermen recovered from their Saturday loss winning 2 of the 3 periods vs. Heights.  Offense repeated pressure as CYHO out-shot opponents by 20 shots as they had also done in yesterday's loss.  Peter Noble scores at 3:42 of the first period from Keigan Mennetti and Peter Mintun.  Blair Wolcott adds a second goal unassisted as the fishermen are up 2-0.  Michael Lange scores from Lucas Gsellman and Peter Noble pushing the fishermen up 3-2 early in the 3rd period, after Heights scored 2 in the second.  Peter Noble scores again from Jeremy Todd and Greg Oneacre at 7:48 of the third period.  Steven Epprecht scores at 5:55 from Michael Lange.  Heights scores again at 4:46 leaving the score 5-3 CYHO.  Had CYHO scored earlier tying the second period the extra 1/2 point also would have put them in the finals of the tournament.

CYHO wins all 3 periods and game vs. Valley Forge 8-1
Although disappointed as CYHO players realized after the Heights vs. Chesapeake game that they would still be 1/2 point out even if winning all 3 periods vs. Forge, players focused on playing consistently good hockey for an entire game.  CYHO outshot opponents for a third time by 20 or more (42 shots vs. 6 shots).  Lucas Gsellman scored from Blair Wolcott and Michael Lange at .41 clinching the 1st period.  The flood gates finally opened as the fishermen scored 5 more goals in the second period.  Steven Epprecht scored assisted by Peter Noble and Cory Stockard at 6:05.  Jeremy Todd scored from Ted Clements and Jon Deacon at 4:47.  Blair Wolcott scored assisted by Lucas Gsellman and Nick Levine at 1:09.  Jeremy Todd repeats scoring from Ted Clements and Jon Deacon again at .35 left in the second period.  Keigan Mennetti scores with 1 second left with a long stretch and nice pass from behind the net from Jeremy Todd and Jon Deacon.  Valley Forge scored a goal at 11 minutes off a rebound.  Chris Gurreri scores at 4:43 in the third period assisted by Michael Lange and Craig Sherwood.  Blair Wolcott scores a minute later from Peter Noble.  Finals score CYHO 8-1 over Valley Forge.  Logan Gsellman played well in net although not receiving the normal shot action, finishing games 2 and 3 strong after the early loss.

CYHO Minor dominates Cleveland Panthers 94 AAA team - capitalizing on a couple first period power-plays winning 11-3.
Scoring on both power-plays in the first period and adding 2 others puts the Fishermen up by a score of 4-0 after a period of play at Arctic Freeze on Saturday.  Jeremy Todd scores assisted by Peter Noble and Greg Oneacre.  Braeden Quast scores half way through the period assisted by Peter Noble and Steven Epprecht.  Michael Lange scores assisted by Jeremy Todd and Lucas Gsellman at 5:05 of the 1st.  Nick Levine scores from Keigan Mennetti and Cory Stockard 10 seconds later.  Braeden Quast puts in a couple more in the second period scoring at 9:01 from Craig Sherwood and Peter Noble, and Quast again from Peter Noble and Steven Epprecht at 5:05 of the second, putting CYHO up 7-0 before a Panther goal.  Brent Nelson starts it off in the third period with a goal from Cory Stockard and Nick Levine at 7:02.  Keigan Mennetti scores at 5:58 from Braeden Quast and Lucas Gsellman.  Peter Noble scores at 5:24 assisted by Michael Lange and Craig Sherwood.  Braeden Quast scores again from Logan Gsellman and Keigan Mennetti at 3:50.  CYHO lets two goals in leaving the score 11-3.  Braeden Quast finishes with a Hat-trick and extra goal, plus an assist with 5 points.  Peter Noble has 5 assists.

CYHO Minor team is currently 14-29-6.  With 1/2 of our Minor Team players being 93/94 birthyear, they have faired well against many 92 Teams.  We are looking at a very strong returning Peewee team next season, with the experience our younger players gained this season.

The CYHO AA Minor Team pulls off tournament win in its 6th attempt,

With a win over Strongsville's AA #2 Team, the AA Minor team won it's first tournament. After coming up short previously and many times by only one goal the CYHO AA Minor team won the Jan.14th-16th Sportsweekend Tournament.  The last time the Minors played the mixed 92-93 birth-year Strongsville Team, it resulted in an 8-1 loss in September and a 4-1 loss earlier in the tournament.  Peter Noble came back strong in his second game back from a broken foot injury, finishing the finals game with a hat-trick (3 goals).  Noble was selected as the MVP of the game, while goalie Ben Todd took home the big trophy, saving 11 of the 13 Strongsville shots for the 5-2 Tournament win.

The Minor fishermen faced a tough game vs. the Strongville #2 team in the Friday game with only 11 skaters.  Ted Clements tied up the game from Michael Lange in the second period 1-1, but couldn't hold off Strongsville as they barreled to a 4-1 win over the CYHO.  The last goal was an open netter as CYHO got an extra skater out trying to catch up.

Jeremy Todd scores midway through the game from Chris Gurreri and Blair Wolcott.  Logan Gsellman played valiantly as he faced a barrage of difficult shots through the entire game.

The CYHO coach informed players after the game the recent Cardinal record in the Elite division.  The Cardinal team was strengthened with the addition of 4 new players and have also improved as a team.  They have beaten the GRAHA Griffins recently who won the Elite Division last season.  They have also lost recently by one goal to Garden City Goldwings and the Canton Crush who are very strong Elite AA teams.  If there are any Indiana AAA 92s looking to move closer to the Cleveland Area, the CYHO welcomes you with open arms.  Some more humor.

CYHO Minor loses to Pittsburgh Penguins 94 AAA not capitalizing on Power-play chances

Jon Deacon finally scored unassisted to complete the 1-4 loss with 3:38 in the 3rd Period.  The Pittsburgh Team was penalized late in the game receiving 7 penalties to the CYHO 1 penalty in the 3rd period, but players missed opportunities to pass and put the puck in the net.  On a positive note, the fishermen had lots of chances to score and some of our biggest and most physical players, who had agreed again to play a non-checking game kept their cool and didn't get penalties or retaliate when repeatedly harassed.  We need to pass and shoot better and next time the breaks might go our way!

CYHO Defeats Cleveland Panthers 93 AAA Team 6-0

The CYHO Major Team came back strong as some of the players were competing in their 4th game of the day and the rest were in their 3rd.  The well-conditioned Majors started the first period with a goal by Chris Gurreri from Ted Clements.  Ted Clements scores again unassisted in the second period at 5:17.  Then the flood gates opened as Nick Levine scores assisted by Chris Gurreri at 12:51 of the 3rd.  Keigan Mennetti scores from Lucas Gsellman at 11:17.  Greg Oneacre scores assisted by Nick Levine at 10:56.  Michael Lange scores from Ted Clements at 7:17 of the third period to leave the score 6-0 for the fishermen.  The Panther's (winning 2-1) had denied the CYHO team a final in the Nov.26th Sportsweekend Tournament, so it was a good win for the CYHO Majors.  Logan Gsellman receives his 7th Shut-Out for the season, facing 17 shots on goal.

Late Nighters pull it out 5-4 over Pitt Hornets as coach rushes home for sleep

The coach quickly thanked the 10 players who made the 9:30pm game to squeak out the win over the Hornets 94 AAA team before heading off to bed.  We do have some well conditioned players!  Blair Wolcott scores unassisted at 11:22 of the first period.  Chris Gurreri scores unassisted and then Cory Stockard scores assisted by Keigan Mennetti.  Wolcott scores again in the second period and then Braeden Quast scores assisted by Blair Wolcott and Chris Gurreri at 6:47 of the second period to make it 5-1 fishermen.  The Hornets scored 3 more goals as the legs began to fatigue, but to the credit of the big 10 we held them off for the 5-4 win.  I think it was past our goaltenders bedtime as well as the other goaltender was fast asleep.  Thanks for the great games today, Ben Todd.  Ben is also a 94--that is 10 year old and faired the 3-14 minute periods as the game ended at almost 11pm.  Thanks for the win!

CYHO Majors go down 0-8 vs. Gilmour Sabres #1

The Majors started slow letting in a couple quick ones before setting up hockey shop on Sunday.  Lack of offense plagued the fisherman partially due to one of their top goal scorers being out with a broken foot.  The teams played a 12-12-14 minute game with extra time, so it wasn't quite as bad as the score might look in a one hour game, but Logan Gsellman faced 52 shots.  The fishermen will continue to work hard throughout the rest of the season as Gilmour is by far the best Ohio Team they have faced.

The fishermen jumped up by two goals in the first period as Michael Lange scores from two perfect passes and assists--Keigan Mennetti banked the puck off the back boards to Logan Gsellman behind the goal line who fed Lange in front.  Michael Rudin scores the second with a nice shot again assisted by Keigan Mennetti.  Bryce Lunde scores an extra effort goal at 11:19 of the 2nd assisted by Peter Mintun and Peter Noble.  Lunde banged away at the loose puck at stuck on the post.  Strongsville put in two goals, but within a few seconds Peter Noble broke around defensemen to score and go put the fishermen up 4-2 at 5:38 of the second period.  A minute later Peter Mintun scores while on one knee from Peter Noble and Chad Bednar.  Lucas Gsellman scores a wrap around goal assisted by Nick Levine at 3:21 of the 2nd period.  Nick Levine scores 15 seconds later assisted by Brent Nelson and Braeden Quast off Nelson's rebound coming out front.  Peter Noble scores again assisted by Braeden Quast and Michael Rudin at 1:39 of the 2nd.  Lucas Gsellman scores unassisted with 6 seconds left in the period bringing the score to 9-2.  Keigan Mennetti scores off a rebound assisted by Michael Lange and Peter Noble at 8:09 of the 3rd period and Strongsville put in another goal at 7:25 leaving the final 10-3 CYHO victory.

November 12th-14th
CYHO starts weekend with loss to Western Rival North Olmstead AA #1

North Olmstead got a little sweet revenge on the CYHO AA Majors this past Friday night at Baron's Arena after losing their first meeting in a shoot-out.  The N.O. Eagles got up in the first period as CYHO countered in the second.  2nd period goal came from Jeremy Todd, assisted by Craig Sherwood and Peter Noble.  Jon Deacon tied the game up with a nice play from behind the net, flipping a back-hand over the goaltender as he crossed the goal line, assisted by Zach Lunde and Blair Wolcott.  Two more goals by the Eagles sunk the fishermen's chances in the third period as CYHO loses 2-4.

CYHO AA Majors faced off against the CSHL Select 92s and lost 6-2. After remaining tied after the first period the CSHL Selects pulled away and CYHO Majors never quite caught up. CYHO scoring came from Peter Noble assisted by Jeremy Todd in the first period.  Michael Lang scores assisted by Ted Clements late in the third period.  CSHL Selects did place a couple very nice wrist shots in top corners for their 6-2 win over our Major team.

CYHO AA Minors tie CSHL Select 93 Team 7-7

The Select 93s that we recognized were from Strongsville, Parma, Euclid, Winterhurst, and Shaker and maybe a couple other Suburban programs.  CYHO scoring was started by Michael Rudin form Steven Epprecht at 7:24 of the first period.  Keigan Mennetti tips in a slapshot from Steven Epprecht and Michael Rudin assisted at 8:11 of the second period.  Michael Rudin scores again assisted by Jon Deacon tying the game at 3 a piece at 7:30 of the second period.

Lucas Gsellman puts CYHO up by a goal assisted by Nick Levine at 7:00 of the 2nd.  Then at 6:08 Peter Noble makes a perfect pass on a 2 on 1 to Peter Mintun who buries the puck putting the fishermen up by 2.  The Select 93s scored two more at the end of the 2nd period and then both teams plunked in two more goals each in the third period.  Third period scoring came from Michael Lange assisted by Jon Deacon and Peter Noble.  Jon Deacon scores again to tie the game up at 7-7 at 3:01 of the third period.  Deacon (from Defense) and Rudin each end up with 3 points and Noble and Epprecht each had 2.

Saturday, November 6th

CYHO AA Minor Team faced off against the Canton/Akron AA #1 at 7am on Saturday morning coming up short by a goal.

The Minor team competed well for having 4-94's, 6-93's, and 4-92's showed up for the early game.  CYHO scoring started with a tying goal at 1 from Michael Lange from Lucas Gsellman and Cory Stockard during the 1st period.  Braeden Quast tied it up again at 2 a piece from Nick Levine and Ted Clements in the 3rd period, but Canton/Akron scored again to deliver a 3-2 loss to the fishermen.

CYHO AA Majors play well in two games after the slow start against Sylvania
CYHO AA Majors got behind early in the first period as the cycling Chicago Express AA #1 Team scored 3 unanswered goals.  The fishermen fought hard though the 2nd period keeping the score tied and at 7:40 of the 3rd period Lucas Gsellman scored unassisted to leave the final 3-1.  Reporting from the parents and staff was that the team played very well against an Express team who had an awesome offense.

CYHO AA Majors win 2-0 over Strongsville AA #2 as Logan Gsellman receives his 5th shut-out of the season.

With 11 skaters Saturday afternoon the CYHO AA Majors came alive against the Mustangs in their 3rd game of the tournament.  After two close losses, this one was just about playing your best as neither team would advance to the final.  The fishermen kept the pressure on in the Strongsville end for much of the game, but defense and good goaltending kept the game close.  Steven Epprecht scores a nice goal at 7:30 of the second period with a wrist shot from the point from Peter Mintun.  Ted Clements scores assisted by Lucas Gsellman at 2:30 left in the second period.   Hats off to Strongsville #2 as officiating commented on what a great game with only a couple stoppages of play.  They have a nice bunch of players and some great kids and parents and it is a pleasure to see them at the rink.

CYHO AA Minor Team came back strong against Sylvania's AA #1 team on Sunday after a disappointing loss to Michigan Icebreakers, which denied the Minors a final in the previous weekend's tournament.  The CYHO AA Major Team played two of the top CSHL AA teams on friday night in back to back games beating North Olmstead AA #1 in overtime and then losing to Strongsville AA #1 in the late game.

CYHO AA Minor 2-4 vs. Michigan Icebreakers AA

The fishermen outshot Michigan 21-10, but the Icebreakers goalie was all over the bottom of the net.  Icebreaker defensemen tied up sticks in front and the CYHO AA Minor Team couldn't find the upper net off any rebounds to topple the Icebreakers who advance to the tournament final on Sunday.  CYHO Minor's started with a goal on the power-play by Blair Wolcott from Lucas Gsellman and Zack Lunde at 7:54 of the third period.  Greg Oneacre then brought the game within one--a 2-3 score, assisted by Zack Lunde and Michael Lange at 2:40 left in the game.  The Icebreakers scored again 20 seconds later leaving a two goal deficit.

CYHO AA Majors 1-0 vs. North Olmstead AA #1 in overtime
CYHO AA Majors battled with North Olmstead for 3 periods leaving a 0-0 score.  Both teams played well defensively.  Players selected for the 5 man shootout were Peter Noble, Blair Wolcott, Zack Lunde, Chris Gurreri, and Lucas Gsellman.  Nice dekes by the first four left the fishermen with 4 goals.  On the other end, Logan Gsellman stopped two of the first four North Olmstead attackers, not needing help from his older brother this time around, who was up next to shoot.

CYHO AA Majors 1-5 vs. Strongsville AA #1

The AA Major's found themselves down by 3 goals going into the 3rd period as Peter Noble scores assisted by Craig Sherwood.  2 more goals against left the fishermen in a 5-1 loss.

CYHO AA Minors tie and then win over Sylvania's AA Team
The CYHO team started off the scoring in the first game as Blair Wolcott scores unassisted at 10:48 of the first period.  After 2 Sylvania goals, Wolcott scores again to tie things up at 8:09 of the 2nd period assisted by Lucas Gsellman.  In the 3rd period, Michael Lange puts the fishermen up by a goal with an unbelievable extra effort short-handed goal.  Lange wins a battle with a defensemen in the corner skates out with enough of an angle for a shot and launches the puck just under the cross-bar.  Sylvania then scores again to leave the game tied 3-3.
CYHO AA Minor 4-3 vs. Sylvania AA
CYHO's Logan Gsellman ties up the game at 1 a piece with a nice shot from the slot, with two perfect passes out of the corner by Blair Wolcott and then Michael Lange.  Lucas Gsellman scores on the power-play at 11:22 of the 2nd period assisted by Chad Bednar and Zach Lunde.  Then Zack Lunde scores assisted by Blair Wolcott at 10:08 of the 3rd period.  Jeremy Todd scores at 1:59 with a perfect pass up-assist from Chad Bednar.  Sylvania scores one more time as 3 of their players crashed the net.  The CYHO team played amazingly to get the win, fighting off two 5 on 3s and 7 penalties vs. 5 to Sylvania.  Ben Todd finished with two more of his best games of the season, making a number of great saves--and a few on breakaway

The CYHO AA Minor Team split the first two games of the Oct. 22nd Sportsweekend

CYHO AA Minor 3-5 vs. Michigan Jaguars

After a 0-0 first period, the fishermen got behind by a goal as Lucas Gsellman tied things up assisted by Jeremy Todd, both playing defense.  After a couple more Jaguar goals, Michael Lange puts in a nice goal from passes/ assists by Nick Levine and Logan Gsellman.  Chris Gurreri found the net in the 3rd period assisted by Zack Lunde and Bryce Lunde.  The Minor Team had some good pressure in front of the Jaguar net late in the game but was not able to convert another goal, losing 5-3.  Ben Todd faced 32 shots.

CYHO AA Minor 2-1 vs. Windsor, Ontario AA Minor
Again Todd faced approximately 30 shots vs. Windsor and the fishermen killed off two penalties to none.  CYHO finally got the first goal in the middle of the 2nd period on a good line change where Greg Oneacre passed the puck off the boards catching Zack Lunde's stick near the Windsor blue line.  Lunde raced in with little brother, Bryce, but found the opening in the net as the backchecking defenseman stayed between the two.  CYHO goes up 2-0 as Michael Lange puts in a backhand with 14 seconds left in the second period, off the face off.  Assists went to Zack Lunde and Logan Gsellman.  Windsor scored one goal at 6:26 of the 3rd period.  Defensemen played a pretty solid game---Chad Bednar, Jeremy Todd, Lucas Gsellman, Greg Oneacre, and Michael Rudin.  Forwards backchecked pretty well.  The game MVP though was definitely Ben Todd though in net as he continued to make great saves throughout the entire game.  One more win puts you in the finals, guys.

CYHO AA Minor Team plays a solid third period, losing to Cleveland Heights AA #1 - October 18th
The fishermen fell flat letting in 3 goals in the first and again in the second period, Tuesday against Cleveland Heights.  Braeden Quast had a nice breakaway goal in the 1st period assisted by Zack Lunde and Cory Stockard.  Then in the third period CYHO Minors played aggressive and kept the pressure on in the Heights end.  Logan Gsellman made a nice pass out from the corner to Zack Lundy, who slipped the puck over to Michael Rudin, who scored all alone in front of the Height's goaltender.  The CYHO Minor's won the third period, but were too far behind losing 6-2.

Sportsweekend Peewee AA Finals Champions, Oct. 8-10

The CYHO AA Major Team had a busy weekend to say the least as they jumped in the Sportsweekend Tournament needing a team while other games were already planned.  The team completed the weekend 5-1-1 while the Minor Team went 1-0.

The fishermen were down by 1 goal with 6 minutes left in the morning game vs. Strongsville AA #1 in the morning game, before getting into penalty trouble.  With 3 more goals in the next minute of play, the fishermen settled for going into the tournament finals in 2nd place, after losing 4-0, against that same Strongsville team.

CYHO AA Majors discussed goal scoring between games as there had been an obvious shortage of offense.  With a 0-0 first period the fishermen went to work as Zack Lunde scored assisted by Blair Wolcott at 7:07 of the second period.  Lucas Gsellman added another goal assisted by Zack Lunde at 4:23.  Two more goals came in ten seconds of each other as Chris Gurreri scores from Blair Wolcott and Steven Epprecht at 2:41 of the 2nd period. Then at 2:31, Zack Lunde scores again assisted by Ted Clements.  A reversal from last game leaves the fishermen on top 4-0 going into the 3rd period.  The larger Strongsville team continued to attack outshooting the fishermen 13-4 in the 3rd period, but good defense on all the players part kept the rebounds from finding loose Mustang sticks.  Goaltender, Logan Gsellman made 34 saves on 36 shots.  CYHO had 26 shots winning the final 4-2 over Strongsville.  Chris Gurreri received the tournament MVP for all the hard work along the boards and nice extra effort goal.

CYHO AA Major improves record to 12-10-2,  defeating CSHL Select 92 Team

As the well conditioned CYHO AA Major team began its 3rd game of the day, it looked like it might be ugly as one of the CSHL Select faster/bigger 92 guys broke around defensemen for an easy first period goal.  Somehow the fishermen kept making smart plays thoughout the game to get things back in order.  Michael Rudin took another end to end rush from defense beating the goaltender after deking at least 3 other players on his way down the ice.  Chris Gurreri scores a minute later in the 1st period from Lucas Gsellman and Peter Noble at 3:01.  Then, Peter Noble scores assisted by Blair Wolcott with .47 left in the game leaving the fishermen on top 3-1.  CYHO's outsized defensemen again played fabulous--Michael Rudin, Cory Stockard, Steven Epprecht, Craig Sherwood, Jon Deacon, and Michael Yarcusko.

OCTOBER 9TH

CYHO Major puts up a Win and a Tie with Columbus Cardinals 93 AAA's while the AA Minors take another WIn vs. Parma Peewee #2 with no losses in last 5 games.

CYHO AA Majors tie Columbus Cardinals 93 AAAs 5-5 in first game

CYHO AA Majors enjoyed a trip to Worthington on Saturday for two 1.5 hour games.  With 12 skaters the fishermen tied the 93 AAA's for the first time this season.  Zack Lunde tied the game up at 1 a piece at 12:41 of the first period assisted by Blair Wolcott and Cory Stockard.  Peter Noble scored mid way through the 2nd period assisted by Braeden Quast and Steven Epprecht to get the game within one after two Columbus goals.  Lucas Gsellman ties up the game at 3 from Cory Stockard and Greg Oneacre at 8:25 of the second period on a power play.  Zach Lunde ties it up again at 4 after a Columbus goal from Oneacre and Gsellman on another power play at 14:32 of the 3rd.  Then, Blair Wolcott ties it up again at 5 a piece from Peter Noble and Lucas Gsellman at 2:30 left in the game.  The score ends tied 5-5 after a 5 minute overtime.

CYHO AA Majors wins over Columbus Cardinals 93 AAA 6-3 in second game

The fishermen amazed the coach with their great conditioning as they went into the second 1.5 hour game with the Cardinals with only 10 skaters.  Blair Wolcott scores early on the power play from Peter Noble and Zack Lunde.  Wolcott does it again from Greg Oneacre and Peter Noble at 4:08 of the 1st period.  Wolcott finishes his hatrick up in the first period assisted by Lucas Gsellman at 1:12 to go up 3-1.  The Cardinals tied the game at 3 a piece till the end of the 2nd period with two of their goals coming on power plays.  CYHO coach called a crucial time-out with .27 left on the clock in the third period asking the power play line for another goal that could break the game in favor of the fishermen.  Sure enough as the power play line has been clicking, Peter Noble scores a nice backhand from Blair Wolcott and Lucas Gsellman.  Greg Oneacre adds another off a nice point shot from Peter Noble.  Then Noble scores again from Jon Deacon at 3:48 left in the game to finish off the Cardinals 6-3.

CYHO AA Minors win over Parma Peewee # 2 by a score of 4-2

Lucas Gsellman scores at 4:52 in the second period unassisted after a 0-0 first period.  Cory Stockard scores shortly after unassisted.  Although the fishermen outshot Parma more than 2 to 1, the Parma team put in 2 goals to tie things up with 5:09 left in the game.  Greg Oneacre gets the game winner during a 4 on 4 assisted by Blair Wolcott at 3:34 left in the game.  Chad Bednar ices the cake with an open netter with .54 left on the clock picking the puck off a Parma defensemen for the breakaway.  CYHO wins 4-2.

OCTOBER 8th
The Christian Youth Hockey Organization's Peewee AA Major Team returned to a 500 mark this Friday after compiling 2 wins in the first two games of this weekend's Sportsweekend Tournament bringing their record to 9-9-1.  One parent commented over pizza between games that this was the first time he can ever remember winning a game against a Buffalo team.

Game 1:  CYHO Peewee AA Major vs. South Buffalo
After a first period goal against, CYHO's Zack Lunde scores unassisted on a breakaway at 2:17 left in the first period to tie things up.  Lucas Gsellman scores with a perfect pass and assist from Peter Noble, also assisted by Zack Lunde at 2:59 of the second period.  CYHO Majors who have been struggling on the power-play finally connected with two more power-play goals.  Blair Wolcott has all day in front as Peter Noble evaded opponents behind the net with the feed to Wolcott in front--Wolcott scores.  Then Noble scores again assisted by Gsellman at 2:34 left in the game. Noble ends with 3 points, Gsellman, and Lunde with 2 each.  How did you like those hip checks folks?  Wow! I've seen some dandies from Greg Oneacre, Michael Yarcusko, and Jon Deacon.  Defenseman and Logan Gsellman in net were again a formidable force.  CYHO 4-1 over South Buffalo AA #1

Game 2: CYHO Peewee AA Major vs. Youngstown Phantoms AA #1
The fishermen were busy shelling the Phantoms goalie all first period and finally a goal came from a nice slap shot from Steven Epprecht assisted by Michael Rudin and Ted Clements.  The Phantoms goalie did play a great game!  CYHO comes alive winning the second period 3-1 with a goal from Jon Deacon assisted by Blair Wolcott and Chris Gurreri.  Then Michael Rudin scores assisted by Peter Mintun and Braeden Quast.  And finally Lucas Gsellman scores unassisted.  Third period CYHO goal scoring came from Michael Rudin again from Chris Gurreri and Peter Mintun.  Rudin steps up ending the night with 3 points--Gurreri and Mintun each had 2 assists.
CYHO defeats the Youngstown Phantoms 5-2

CYHO WINS TOURNAMENT SPRING 2004 CHAMPIONSHIP !!

A rejuvenated CYHO team responds in the David vs. Goliath matchup in the Playoff finals on May 23rd, verses the Mustangs.   Small numbers make no difference to God.  There is nothing small if God is in it.

"If you have the faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move.  Nothing will be impossible for you"  Matthew 17:20.

The game was well fought.  A rough aggressive game left the younger, smaller sized CYHO players often taking the brunt of the checks.  Cheers rang out from the crowd as the players in blue hit the ice on their backs.  CYHO players took Proverbs 24:16 to a new level--"Though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again". (a little humor?)

The 9 CYHO skaters were joined by Matt Marvin half way through the game to make two lines vs. the 16 Mustangs.  CYHO got up early this time on the power play at 9:55 of the 1st period with a 3 on 2 break;  Keigan Mennetti was checked in the slot area, leaving the puck for Chad Bednar, who sent the blistering wrist shot over the goalies blocker side. Then at 11:31 of the 2nd period, a relentless 2 man forecheck by as Chris Gurreri and Craig Sherwood sealed off the back of the net, causing the defenseman to throw the puck up the middle.  Center, Lucas Gsellman picked it off, skated in untouched and deked the goalie on the glove side.  The Mustangs responded with a goal at 5:40 of the 2nd period, as a shot from the point got through deflecting up over Logan Gsellman off Greg Oneacre's stick.  Then at .41 of the 2nd period a Mustang defenseman hits Gsellman in the shin guards at center ice as the loose puck bounces between the two, Gsellman sends it off the boards, assisting Sherwood.  Sherwood skates hard breaking to the middle over the opposing blue line, dekes the goalie on the blocker side with an unbelievable move to seal the fate of the Mustangs.  One last power play goal for the Mustangs with 4:23 left in the 3rd period brings the game within one, 3-2.  Both teams called timeouts.  The Mustangs with 6 attackers were relentless in the CYHO end, with many D to D passes, shots and screens in front.  CYHO players continued to clear the puck out and run the time out for the Playoff Championship win.  Greg Oneacre, Blair Wolcott, and Cory Stockard played a superb game on defense.  All forwards played with a lot of heart, Mike Rudin, Bednar, Mennetti, Marvin, Sherwood, Gsellman, and Gurreri.  Logan Gsellman had a nice game in net. Congratulations on a fine Spring.

Success consists of getting up more times than you fall.
"Though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again." Prov. 24:16

Minors Game 4 vs. Cleveland Hts.

CYHO AA Minors got behind early vs. Cleveland Heights AA #1 Monday night 4-1 by the end of the second period.  Lucas Gsellman walked into the slot for a slap shot that the goalie never saw from Braeden Quast and Nick Levine.  The fishermen outscored Cleveland Heights in the 3rd period and captured back some momentum that they had lost through the middle of the game.  The score was again close at 4-3 until Heights scored again with 1:28 left in the game.  CYHO third period rally was started with a sweet slap shot by Michael Rudin that deflected in just above the goalies pad and under the glove assisted by Bryce Lunde and Blair Wolcott.  Blair Wolcott also had a well placed wrist shot that squeaked in next to the far side post assisted by Cory Stockard.  The fishermen attacked for the last minute in the Heights end as goaltender, Ben Todd got to the bench--had some nice chances, but no goals.  Ben Todd made a lot of nice saves and played a solid game in net.  Our defensemen also many times do not get the credit they deserve, since it is harder to score from back there.  Our six D did a real nice job as usual--Michael Rudin, Chad Bednar, Cory Stockard, Lucas Gsellman, Jeremy Todd, and Michael Yarcusko.

CYHO AA Minor 2-5 vs. Mentor AA #1
CYHO gave up an open netter after being down 4-2 to make the final score 5-2.  It was a strange game with lots of penalties mostly roughings to Mentor at the end of the third period.  CYHO scoring came from Zach Lunde from Blair Wolcott and Lucas Gsellman.  Second goal was from Blair Wolcott assisted by Michael Rudin.

CYHO AA Major 1-1 vs. Allegheny AA #1
After being down by a goal for most of the game CYHO scores twice.  The referee was too far from the opposition net to see the puck go in on the first one, but did notice the puck was still in the net when he got to it, but called no goal anyway.  Then at 3:13 of the 3rd period Blair Wolcott scores assisted by Chris Gurreri and Craig Sherwood.  The finals of the tournament were decided over one goal.  CYHO knew that Allegheny would have to win or tie Southpointe Sunday morning to advance.  Allegheny did tie Southpointe Sunday to advance to the finals.

CYHO AA Minor 1-8 vs. Strongsville AA #2
CYHO AA Minors Advanced to top 4 of the 8 team division before loss.

CYHO's only goal came from Blair Wolcott from Michael Rudin and Chris Gurreri at 3:33 of the 3rd period.  CYHO played an exhausted looking 3rd period letting in 6 goals with the last 3 in the final minute and a half.

CYHO AA MINOR WINS 8-2 VS. STRONGSVILLE PW #3 FOR 2ND IN A ROW !!
Braeden Quast scores from Nick Levine at 3:10 of the 1st period.  Braeden Quast scores again from Nick Levine and Bryce Lunde at 1:49.  Then 10 seconds later Nick Levine scores from Bryce Lunde.  Not a bad minute and a half boys!   2nd period scoring was started again by Braeden Quast from Nick Levine and then Michael Rudin puts in a goal unassisted at 5:12.  3rd period scoring was Nick Levine unassisted and Bryce Lunde from Chad Bednar.  Last goal came from Michael Rudin assisted by Greg Oneacre.  Quast has a hat-trick and Nick Levine has 5 points in the game including the playmaker.  Great game guys!
