CYHO WINS TOURNAMENT SPRING 2004 CHAMPIONSHIP !!

A rejuvenated CYHO team responds in the David vs. Goliath matchup in the Playoff finals on May 23rd, verses the Mustangs.   Small numbers make no difference to God.  There is nothing small if God is in it.

"If you have the faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move.  Nothing will be impossible for you"  Matthew 17:20.

The game was well fought.  A rough aggressive game left the younger, smaller sized CYHO players often taking the brunt of the checks.  Cheers rang out from the crowd as the players in blue hit the ice on their backs.  CYHO players took Proverbs 24:16 to a new level--"Though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again". (a little humor?)

The 9 CYHO skaters were joined by Matt Marvin half way through the game to make two lines vs. the 16 Mustangs.  CYHO got up early this time on the power play at 9:55 of the 1st period with a 3 on 2 break;  Keigan Mennetti was checked in the slot area, leaving the puck for Chad Bednar, who sent the blistering wrist shot over the goalies blocker side. Then at 11:31 of the 2nd period, a relentless 2 man forecheck by as Chris Gurreri and Craig Sherwood sealed off the back of the net, causing the defenseman to throw the puck up the middle.  Center, Lucas Gsellman picked it off, skated in untouched and deked the goalie on the glove side.  The Mustangs responded with a goal at 5:40 of the 2nd period, as a shot from the point got through deflecting up over Logan Gsellman off Greg Oneacre's stick.  Then at .41 of the 2nd period a Mustang defenseman hits Gsellman in the shin guards at center ice as the loose puck bounces between the two, Gsellman sends it off the boards, assisting Sherwood.  Sherwood skates hard breaking to the middle over the opposing blue line, dekes the goalie on the blocker side with an unbelievable move to seal the fate of the Mustangs.  One last power play goal for the Mustangs with 4:23 left in the 3rd period brings the game within one, 3-2.  Both teams called timeouts.  The Mustangs with 6 attackers were relentless in the CYHO end, with many D to D passes, shots and screens in front.  CYHO players continued to clear the puck out and run the time out for the Playoff Championship win.  Greg Oneacre, Blair Wolcott, and Cory Stockard played a superb game on defense.  All forwards played with a lot of heart, Mike Rudin, Bednar, Mennetti, Marvin, Sherwood, Gsellman, and Gurreri.  Logan Gsellman had a nice game in net. Congratulations on a fine Spring.

April 28th - May 16th, 2004

Peewee Major Division of the Strongsville Spring League.  Turned out to be a tough day for the 7 CYHO skaters.  Many were out for other Spring activities.  Keigan Mennetti, and Jacob Cohen assisted Lucas Gsellman's goal at 8:01 of the 3rd period as a last ditch effort to catch up, down 4-1.  The entire group played with a lot of heart, Greg Oneacre, Chris Gurreri, Cory Stockard, Chad Bednar, Logan Gsellman(goalie) and those previously mentioned.  The Mustangs finished CYHO 5-1, with an empty netter with 44 seconds left.

CYHO Spring teams advance to a 9-5 record, losing 2 tight ones by a goal and one game by two.  Players fought hard after praying for our troops tonight, but just weren't able to close the game.  Winterhurst had their full army vs. our 9 skaters--but it was a tough nine.  Both teams played hard.  Goaltending on both teams was excellent!  Refs called a pretty good game too.  You win some--you lose some.

Kudos to the Spellacy, Knipper, Geither boys--all of you played well--but the only ones I know personally--didn't see Eagan---speed.  Spellacy had the first goal for Winterhurst coming directly across the slot left to right unassisted.  He also had the 2nd as CYHO went down 2-0 at 3:01 of the 2nd from Glover and Novack.  CYHO finally scored on a powerplay at 11:10 of the 3rd with another net crashing goal by Cory Delsavio from Chris Gurreri.

This past Sunday we lost 3-1 to Cleveland Skating Club 3-1, our only goal coming from Lucas Gsellman from Mikey Rudin and Keigan Mennetti.  We played weak on defense giving up too many breakaways.

And back on April 22nd--sorry guys-forgot to pick up the game sheet--we lost to a very big Strongsville team 4-3.  They didn't fill out the game sheet so--I don't know who actually scored for their team.

CYHO scoring was:

Lucas Gsellman from Jacob Cohen at 5:37 of the 1st period
Keigan Mennetti from Jacob Cohen at 2:42 of the 1st period
Cory Del Savio from either Craig Sherwood or Timmy Lowther and
Keigan Mennetti.  (not sure whether that is a 9 or a 0)

April 24th, 2004

CYHO team splits games Thursday,22nd and Saturday 24th in the Strongsville league pushing to a 9-3 record.  A tough physical battle erupted as CYHO met Strongsville rivals.  Players appeared to be all okay as a couple were picked up each period usually from a hard check.  Opposing goaltender Matt Marvin played very well as CYHO crashed the net and cashed in.  Glad Marvin is okay after getting stepped on by one of the Strongsville players clearing the traffic, as Marvin also skates out for the CYHO in the Garfield league.  Logan Gsellman receives his second shutout vs. the Strongsville squad in the 5-0 win.  Logan made some great saves on a few 1-0's to complete the game.

Scoring detail:  Mikey Rudin scores on a breakaway at 8:13 of the first period with a nice backhand move.  At 5:22 of the first period, net crashing Cory Del Savio scores from Rudin and Greg Oneacre.  Del Savio repeats, scoring off a blistering slapshot from Cory Stockard on the powerplay at 6:48 in the second period.  Oneacre scores as he rushes from defense, and Rudin receives his third point of the game assisting at 8:48 of the third. Then at 3:37 left in the game Jacob Cohen bangs in a rebound off of Lucas Gsellman's slapshot from the point.

Recap on the game-  The team played great today, as all ten skaters contributed.  Lysaght, and Gsellman were most physical on defense as Stockard and Oneacre finessed the puck up the ice.  The two forward lines contributed immensely as the goon line, Rudin, Del Savio, and Mennetti were immovable in front of the opposition net.  Bednar, Peachey, and Cohen cycled and worked their magic in the offensive zone.  You could see the practice drills with D to D passing and forward cycling really paying off.  Exceptional game fellas!

Wow, what a weekend!  With the Tuesday post-game coaches message ringing in their ears CYHO delivers a 3 game late birthday present.  Frustrated about a less than 100% effort on the coaches birthday, he exclaimed, "You guys owe me---you owe me 3 wins this weekend for that effort--today was my birthday you know!"  The team responded in front of a sellout crowd, with the Toronto Roadrunners AHL team looking on (although a few pros played soccer in the corner of the rink.  The Baron's AHL team was preparing for their playoff series game with Toronto just an hour later and many CYHO players planned to stay for the great match-up.)

CYHO players and coaches knew we were in for a tough game against a well seasoned Winterhurst team with some of last years Squirt Select All-stars who moved up with the returning Winterhurst Peewees.

The CYHO team got off to a late start going down 2-0 in the first period.  The coaches message was "We need to get a goal or two this period to get back in this game, and not get scored on."  The team responded again with a goal by Cory Del Savio from Chad Bednar at 9:28 of the second period.  With only 1:16 left in the period, Chris Gurreri banged in a rebound assisted from a defensive rush of Lucas Gsellman from Timmy Lowther.  Then at 8:13 of the 3rd Del Savio (the ice man) delivers the final game winning goal from Gsellman and Michael Rudin.

Cory Stockard reminded the coach afterwards in the locker room--"Coach, your birthday present was a box, inside a box, inside a box."  Thanks for the diamond ring inside the box, Stockard--- well I guess a total team effort and game winning goal from Del Savio will have to do!

After a tough 2-1 loss to one of the Strongsville teams this past Tuesday a rejuvenated CYHO team shuts them out on Saturday with a 4-0 winLogan Gsellman made no mistakes in net, as some of the AHL Baron's watched after their morning skate.  We were glad to give up our earlier ice to the pros; and they really played great at the packed Iceland Arena Saturday evening against Toronto Roadrunners.

Cory Stockard from Luke Sunde at 5:21 of the third
Billy Peachey with a nice backhand and great pass and  assist from Blair Wolcott at 2:35 of the 3rd
Stockard must have got some tips from the AHL Barons on his trip to the bench as the game was getting started, finishing with 3 points.

Later in the day CYHO wins 8-1 over Winterhurst in the Garfield league
CYHO Scoring

CYHO Peewee AA loses by a goal in hard fought game.  Hockey is a funny sport--when the puck hits the post or crossbar--it doesn't count, unless it goes all the way over the goal line, even sometimes when its in the net, but the ref thought it was kicked in, or when it is in the goalie's glove a foot over the goal line. Oh well, he was a lot closer than I was to the net--maybe I need glasses or at least a foggy-stick-scuffed visor.

Well guys, we know what we need to work on---shooting---in the corners that is.  The opposing goaltender played well, but you guys outshot opponents 24-11 in the 2-1 loss on Tuesday.  Both teams played pretty good defense although there were a couple breakaways for both teams.  Delsavio learned how to crash the net!  There were some other positives, but we definitely need more scoring this weekend.  You guys don't break down and cry everytime you miss the net or the goalie saves it.  I won't mention any names, but this little girl--the first time I took her to an organized hockey practice, would skate up to me and cry with these crocodile tears everytime she missed the net or the goalie saved it.  I just had to keep telling her, "Honey you are going to score.  There are some games I've had 10 shots and none of them went in and others I've had 5 and 4 of them went in--hockey is just funny like that."

Chris Gurreri had the lonely goal assisted by Michael Rudin and Dickie Lysaght

On a positive note 4 of our 94's had fun tonight at the 3 on 3 games.  Chad Bednar, Kip Kaminski, Jacob Yelsky, and Logan Gsellman played well and split games at the Arctic Freeze Arena.  And not that losing wasn't a positive note--as the team knows I hate to lose, but losing often shows you what you need to work on the most to win later on----shoot your pucks at home--but not near house windows.

Sun. April 9th

Christian Youth Hockey Peewee AA Team improved its record to 5-1 in the Spring Leagues with a win over Cleveland Heights last night in the Garfield League.

Scoring for CYHO:
Lucas Gsellman from Chad Bednar and Timmy Lowther at 11:38 of 1st
Jacob Yelsky from Chad Bednar and Timmy Lowther at 8:46 of the 1st
Mike Rudin unassisted at 2:50 of the 2nd
Lucas Gsellman unassisted at 7:50 of the 3rd
Greg Oneacre from Keigan Mennetti and Timmy Lowther at :29 of the 3rd

Congrats to Timmy Lowther on the Playmaker Award!!!  Great defensive game to all defensemen who took shifts-Kaminski, Delsavio, Lowther, Wolcott, Lysaght, Oneacre, and Gsellman.

Sun. April 4th

CYHO has most of the team back for another big win over Cleveland Skating Club.  Congrats first to the Tri-C Peewee AA's who did step up and take Embro, Ontario to a 5-2 victory on Saturday.  Lysaght, Wolcott, Gsellman, Lowther and Oneacre all played great.  The Squirts won again as well in a shootout.

In the Cleveland Skating Club game, thanks to Bednar, Gurreri, and Sherwood for filling in with their 7 skaters.  Dickie Lysaght and Timmy Lowther were plus 3 in the 4-1 win.  Greg Oneacre, Lucas Gsellman, Jacob Yelsky and Billy Peachey were plus 2.

Logan Gsellman's shutout was snuffed out with a deflection off of Oneacre's skate.

Scoring- Oneacre from Yelsky and Gsellman at 5:54 of the 1st
Matt Marvin from Gsellman at 3:50 of the 1st
Lowther from Keigan Mennetti at 1:24 of the 2nd
Gsellman from Stockard and Lowther at 9:52 of the 3rd

I think Gurreri had their goal as it was not a No. on their line up.  He and Sherwood had some great cycling and passing.  Bednar had his best physical game of the season, as announced by Lucas Gsellman on the ride home.

Lastly, we read a few stories from the Voice of the Martyrs newsletter on persecuted Christians in Pakistan, Indonesia, and other foreign countries.  We are blessed to be able to practice our faith in America without fear of our families being tortured or killed.  Please pray with us for these Christians abroad.
