SPRING HOCKEY APPLICATION

*Spring Teams will again form in 2007.  We would like to take 7-9 CYHO players in the following divisions next Spring to combine with mostly Ontario players to play 2 AAA tournaments in May, (93s, 94s, and 95s).  If we have enough 92 AA's who want to play a tournament in the Spring we would add this to the Spring schedule as well.

ONTARIO TOURNAMENT

The first CYHO AAA team competed well in tournaments in Ontario in May 2006.

The following Cleveland area players combined with a couple Belle Tire Wizards playing the Sarnia Bluewater Sharks Tournament on May 5th.  Although the team was shorthanded only skating 8-9 skaters per game, the boys did well.  The coach got stuck on the wrong side of the border one evening having to forfeit a game due to having the only goalie with him.  We were short players due to schedule conflicts and were partially affected by the Baron's 93 tryout going on in Detroit (playing the Lakeland Tournament).  A few players who had planned to play with the CYHO ended up playing with the Baron's team as part of their tryout in Detroit.

The highlight of the tournament was the battle with Windsor, as up until the third period CYHO was winning 2-1, but had 3 scored against in the third period going down 4-2.  Logan Gsellman played the entire game in net and also faced approximately 60 shots in the 6-0 loss to Taylor Wild, and with 8 skaters vs. 18.

1. Logan Gsellman (goalie)
2. Alec Gerred
3. Chris Vehovic
4. Cory Daugherty
5. Kevin Andrews
6. Zach Johnson
7. Lucas Gsellman
8. Pat Beirne

The following Cleveland/Pittsburgh Area players competed with Ontario players in the very prestigious OTTF (93) AAA tournament this past weekend, May 12th.  This was the Tournament for witnessing the biggest, fastest 93s in Spring of 2006 in North America.  You'de have to attend to know what I'm talking about.  A couple of the Mississauga boys mentioned that most of the St. Michael's (93) players play for a 92 AAA team in Ontario--and they were that good!

1. Logan Gsellman (goalie) Cleveland CYHO
2. Ryan Lenardon (goalie) Ontario
3. Ian Wiesenberg Cleveland Barons
4. Lucas Gsellman Cleveland CYHO/Barons
5. Jason Boag Ontario
6. Chad Bednar Cleveland CYHO
7. Taki Pantzaris Ontario
8. Christian Peitrasak  Ontario
9. Zach Johnson  Cleveland CYHO
10. David Fassbender Cleveland CYHO/CSHL Selects
11. Kingsley Alexander Ontario
12. John Rollis Ontario
13. Jason Maloney Ontario
14. Daniel Perrera Ontario
15. Keigan Mennetti Cleveland CYHO/CSHL Selects
16. Alec Gerred Cleveland CYHO
17. Chis Vehovic Cleveland Cougars
18. Nathaniel Altman Pittsburgh Hornets

The fishermen battled Colorado Thunderbirds to a 4-2 game after being up 2-1, before facing a load of penalties and couple goals while shorthanded.  Logan Gsellman had a solid game in net.  Keigan Mennetti scores from Alec Gerred and Jason Maloney for the 1st goal of the game.  Kingsley Alexander puts the fishermen up 2-1 assisted by Chris Vehovic and Chad Bednar, both from Cleveland Area.  Two of Colorado's last 3 goals were while the fishermen were shorthanded.  The Thunderbirds tied East Coast White, who had defeated St. Michael Buzzers 2-1.

CYHO loses 5-0 to St. Michael's Buzzers and East Coast White.  Ryan Lenardon played spectacular in net keeping the score close in each of the 3 periods in both games.  CYHO was at a serious size and skill disadvantage, but players competed with physical defensive play.

The Fishermen lose last game to Capital Pride 9-2.  Keigan Mennetti scores unassisted and shortly after Jason Maloney scores from Jason Boag leaving the score, CYHO down 4-2 after the first period.  The Pride shooting picked top corners with laser like wrist shots finishing the game up 9-2 over the fishermen.

Overall the experience for our players was excellent.  There were a few St. Louis Jr. Blues coaches (NHL superstars) including Keith Tkachuk and recently retired Al Macinnis staying at our hotel (who the players got to meet).  Other professionals were seen in the stands watching their son's compete in the tournament.  The highlight for our players though had to be the waterslide in the Marriot Hotel pool.
Despite the losses they all had a very excellent trip!

SPRING LEAGUE UPDATES
(as of May 29th, 2006)

4/26 CYHO Bantam Majors win 5-4 vs. Cougars

The Bantams come with a win in last couple minutes in an all around close game with Prpic's (Lake Catholic head coach) Cougars.  After a 0-0 first period, Cory Seidewand scores a bullet from David Fassbender and Paul Steinle with 9:25 left in the second period.  Just 25 seconds later, Paul Steinle scores assisted by Chad Bednar and Cory Seidewand.  Cougars tied up the game, but Jeremy Todd countered with a beautiful slapshot from the point assisted by Kevin Andrews.  After the Cougars again tied the game, Johnny Buttita scores from Brent Nelson and Chad Bednar with 5:12 left in the game.  Cory Seidewand put the game winner in at 1:46 from Brent Nelson.  Joe Brodar played a very solid game in net for the fishermen to salvage the win for CYHO.

4/30  CYHO Peewee Majors lose 2-4 to Rocky River

Eric Jones scored from Kevan Bjornson for the 1st CYHO goal at 11:13 of the first period.
Ben Todd scores off a back-door one timer from Adam Fratczak at 11:44 in the third tying the game.  Rocky River put two more goals in for the 4-2 win--River.

5/3  CYHO Bantam Major defeats Gilmour 4-2

Johnny Buttita scores from David Fassbender and Jeremy Todd on the power-play at 11:39 in the first period.  After one Gilmour goal, CYHO puts 3 in the net.  Johnny Buttita scores from Lucas Gsellman at 3:53 of the second.  Lucas Gsellman scores from Keigan Mennetti at .55 left in the second period.  Brent Nelson scores from Alec Gerred and Lucas Gsellman at 6:01 of the third.  One more Lancer goal leaves the score 4-2---CYHO.

5/9  The Iron 7 and goalie pull off another big win 4-3 in Peewee Majors

With a very short bench of 7 and Austen Peppo in net, the fishermen pull off another underdog win over Shaker!  Chris Day scores at 10:10 of the first period assisted by Mark Sunde and Luke Sunde.  After a Shaker goal Luke Sunde scores from brother Mark Sunde.  Then Mark Sunde scores in the second period putting CYHO on top 3-1, assisted by Rich Slaght and Chris Day.  After 2 more Shaker goals, Chad Bednar comes up with the game winner at 9:15 of the third from Luke Sunde and Chris Day.  Kevin Fox and Logan Gsellman also played well for the fishermen as Peppo was a brick wall in the 3rd period shutting down the Shaker offense.  CYHO wins 4-3.

GAMES PRIOR TO APRIL 25TH LISTED BELOW

CYHO Peewees crush Geauga 8-3 in Baron's Peewee Major Spring League action

Coaches made a deal with the peewees, that once we have two more games with at least 9 skaters, we will spring for icecream after the game.  The boys got a rest--9 skaters vs. Geauga's 12 in Thursday nights game.  Chad Bednar, Logan Gsellman, and Rich Slaght played great defense as Austen Peppo played very well in net.  Forwards included Ben Todd, Colin McDevitt (95), Patrick Ressler (95), Kevin Fox, Mark Sunde and Luke Sunde.  CYHO started the scoring off up 3-0 in the first 2 periods.  Mark Sunde scores from Luke Sunde and Luke Sunde scores from Mark Sunde both in the 1st period.  Luke Sunde scores at 8:58 of the 2nd period from Mark Sunde and Colin McDevitt.  Kevin Fox scores from Mark Sunde (playmaker) and Chad Bednar.  Luke Sunde (hatrick) scores from Kevin Fox at 3:49 of the third period after a couple Geauga goals.  Geauga scores one more before Kevin Fox puts in 3 more goals to make it a hatrick plus one assisted from Chad Bednar and Patrick Ressler at 7:07, one unassisted and the last one assisted by Colin McDevitt and Luke Sunde at 9:55 leaving the score 8-3 CYHO.

CYHO Peewees dominate over Gilmour 8-3 in Baron's Major Division action

Mark Sunde scores from Luke Sunde and Bryce Lunde at 9:04.  Luke Sunde scores from Mark Sunde and Logan Gsellman at 8:48 of the 1st period.  Mark Sunde scores from Kevin Fox and Luke Sunde at 4:55 going up 3-0.  After a Gilmour goal, Luke Sunde scores from Chad Bednar at 11:20 of the 2nd.  Logan Gsellman scores from Colin McDevitt at 6:44.  After another Gilmour goal, Kevin Fox scores from Chad Bednar at 8:15 of the 3rd.  After the 3rd Gilmour goal, Mark Sunde (hat trick) scores unassisted at 1:32.  Kevin Fox scores at 1:00 from Chad Bednar and Mark Sunde.

CYHO Bantams, Ties, Sufferes One Goal Loss vs. Tough Opponents.
One last goal and penalty prevent CYHO Bantams from winning vs. IceHouse,
one of the top teams in Barons Major Division.

CYHO battled vs. at least 8 Baron's 93s plus 5-93 selects coming up short by a goal April 15th.  Adding some extra firepower, CYHO added Cory Seidenwand to level the playing field.  After 3 shorthanded goals, the fishermen were down 3-0 midway thru the 2nd period.  Seidenwand scores from Chad Bednar at 8:23 of the second.  Cory Seidenwand scores again at 5:38 on the power-play from David Fassbender and Taylor Clendenin.  Seidenwand completes the hatrick at 4:38 tying the game from David Fassbender.  Icehouse scored again leaving the game 3-4.  CYHO played shorthanded at the end of the 2nd and 3rd periods, although Icehouse received a 4 minute penalty finally at 30 seconds left in the game--thanks stripes!  Not to mention the extra puck in the Icehouse net that officials missed, but all the parents at that end saw--okay so it was a tie.  The CYHO Bantams have received a lot of respect in the major division, definitely controlling a large part of these last few games with physical play.

CYHO Bantams tie the Warriors 2-2  after losing by a goal earlier this month

David Fassbender scores unassisted to tie the game 1-1 at 1:30 left in the 1st period.  Cory Daugherty ties up the game again at 2-2 from Brent Nelson and Alec Gerred at 6:06 left in the game.  Again, facing at least 8 Baron's 93's among others the fishermen held their own and one of the Icehouse parents told the coach after the game, "Man, those guys said they were going to smoke your team."  You gotta love it!

CYHO Bantams lose to Warriors 4-3 in early April

After 2 Warrior goals, David Fassbender scores from Alec Gerred and Jeremy Todd at 7:37 of the 2nd period.  Keigan Mennetti scores from David Fassbender and Brent Nelson at 2:29.  Alec Gerred ties the game at 3-3 from Chad Bednar and Kevin Andrews.

CYHO Bantams end up tied with Strongsville after 2---5 on 3 goals in last 1:30
(most of Strongsvilles players played on their Bantam AA this past season)

Chris Vehovic scores from David Fassbender at 4:41 of the 1st.  Keigan Mennetti scores from Cory Daugherty and David Fassbender at 3:14 on the power-play in the first.  David Fassbender scores from Alec Gerred at 11:49 of the second period.  The fishermen let in 3 shorthanded goals the last 2 were 5 on 3s to end up tied.  Somehow the fishermen received 2 penalties with 1:30 left on the clock while they had control of the puck in the offensive zone.

CYHO Peewee Major and Bantam Major Teams started Spring 2006 season  Sat. April 1st--Peewees almost won with 5 skaters--no April fools.

CYHO Peewee Majors lose 3-2 to Mentor

Austen Peppo played well in net as the Iron 5 occasionally came over to the bench for a squirt of water.  After a first period Mentor goal, Mark Sunde scores unassisted at 10:26 of the second period.  The fishermen go up 2-1, as Richard Slaght scores from Mark Sunde and Luke Sunde.  Mentor scored two in the last five minutes of the game to go up 3-2.  Logan Gsellman and Justin Holliday played mostly defense.  Shots were close as we missed a few nice scoring chances to tie or win.

We now have 12 on the Peewee roster as we added another yesterday.  Please let Dave Todd know when you cannot make a game, and we are still looking for a few 94-95s to fill this team.

CYHO Bantam Majors tie 2-2 with Elyria after being down 2-0

I recognized 5 from the Elyria Peewee AA division and playoff champions from this past season who had combined with the Elyria Bantam AA's returning from this past season.  Our Bantams played well with only 2-92's to bring the game back to a tie.  Parents who watched the game mentioned the fast pace--lots of speed out there.  Down 2-0, Keigan Mennetti scores from David Fassbender and Taylor Clendenin at 6:14 of the second period.  Lucas Gsellman ties the game at 2-2 from Kevin Andrews at 5:56 of the third period.  A last minute penalty to Elyria left CYHO in the Elyria end with Jeremy Todd and Zach Johnson getting some point shots off and a couple almost scores.  The fishermen had 10 skaters for this one with Joe Brodar in net.  Luke Sunde, Alec Gerred, and Paul Steinle all work hard in the corners and had some nice scoring chances.  Keep up the teamwork Bantams!

After down a goal CYHO rolls to second win of tournament over Wheeling Nailers

After down a goal CYHO rolls to a 2-1 win over Nailers in second game of the Iceland Tournament.  Keigan Mennetti buries a rebound shot off of a high backhand flip to the net by Lucas Gsellman on the point at 9:49 of the 1st period.  Matt O'Hearn gets the game winner assisted by Zach Lunde and Steven Epprecht at 7:27 of the second period.  No goals in the third as Wheeling probably outshot CYHO, but Logan Gsellman battled in net.

CYHO loses nail-biter game vs. Southpointe Rink Rats 1-0

The fishermen were finally scored on at 5:56 in the 3rd period which created a 3 way tie for first place going into the tournament finals.  After a couple of hours of deliberation Saturday night the tournament committee determined that CYHO was in first place and Southpointe was in second, so the teams would meet in the finals Sunday morning.

CYHO claws its way back in game to overtime in finals with Southpointe

Down by the goal the fishermen got a much needed goal by Matt O'Hearn midway through the 3rd period tying the game 1-1.  Although the CYHO bantams had a lot of pressure in the Rink Rat's end, they just couldn't find the back of the net and even on a late power-play chance.  Southpointe scored towards the end of the first 5 minute overtime to win the tournament 2-1.  Players enjoyed practicing shooting in the Rapidshot facility and parents and players made some new friends from the PAHL hockey league in Pittsburgh.  All in all the bantams played a great tournament.

CYHO faces Elyria's AA in a scrimmage on Tuesday, 7:10pm at Arctic Freeze, before its first playoff game vs. Cleveland Skating Club---back at the Iceland Arena in Strongsville on Saturday, Feb. 25th, 6:00pm start time.

CYHO starts busy February Schedule splitting games with Sylvania Maple Leafs

CYHO wins 6-4 in morning game and loses 7-5 in afternoon on 2/4/2006

Morning game- Matt O'Hearn scores from Lucas Gsellman and Brent Nelson at 10:35 tying the game at 1-1.  Michael Lange scores from Matt O'Hearn and Zach Lunde at 2:53 of the 2nd period.  Lucas Gsellman scores from Brent Nelson and Michael Lange at .04 in the 2nd.  After 3 Leaf's goals, Matt O'Hearn scores from Zach Lunde and Michael Lange at 5:04 of the third period.  Michael Lange scores unassisted at 1:47 and Zach Lunde scores from Steven Epprecht and Matt O'Hearn at .31 leaving the game 6-4 CYHO.  O'Hearn has 4 points in morning game.

Afternoon game- Zach Lunde scores from Geo Chapman at 11:41 of the first period.  Steven Epprecht scores at 10:37 of the 1st from Matt O'Hearn and Keigan Mennetti.  After 3 Sylvania goals, Matt O'Hearn scores from Michael Lange and Jeremy Todd at short handed at 7:09 of the second period.  After another 3 Sylvania goals, Zachary Lunde scores unassisted at 7:15 of the third period.  Matt O'Hearn scores again at 6:35 assisted by Geo Chapman with another Sylvania goal leaving the score 5-7.

Michael Lange scores from Zach Lunde getting the only goal in a loss to Cleveland Skating Club.  CYHO faltered early letting in 4 goals in the first period and missing 8 power-play attempts to none.  The CYHO/Euclid #441 split league games with CSC winning 6-2 and then losing 7-1.  We need to play a little better in the playoffs to knock off the 1st place team in the A-1 division, CSC--defense first--boys.

CYHO/Euclid #441 defeats Brooklyn 4-2

Still a good win as Brooklyn only lost a few days earlier to 1st place CSC by 3-2 while CSC was in a last minute power play.  After a Brooklyn goal, Zach Lunde scores from Peter Noble and David Stolz at 4:03 of the 1st.  Steven Epprecht scores from Keigan Mennetti and Michael Lange at 12:52 of the second period.  Paul Steinle scores from Michael Lange and Steven Epprecht at 11:02 of the second.  After a Brooklyn goal, Peter Noble scores from Lucas Gsellman with .37 left in the game.

CYHO Bantams start New Year 2-2-2 in first 6 games of the new year

Christian Youth Hockey Organization's Bantams started the 2006 season with a win over Garfield #413 and a tie with Columbus #411 in league play on January 7th.

CYHO/Euclid #441 downs Garfield 8-1 and ties Columbus 5-5 first Saturday in Jan.

CYHO 8-1 Vs. Garfield---Kyle Weninger scores assisted by Peter Noble at 13:25 of the 1st period.  David Stolz scores assisted by Kyle Weninger at 3:35 of the 2nd.  Zach Lunde scores assisted by Paul Steinle at 2:42 of the 2nd period.  After the only Garfield goal, Craig Sherwood scores from Kyle Weninger at 5:28 of the 3rd.  Michael Lange scores from Jeremy Todd at 5:10 of the third period.  Peter Noble scores from Kyle Weninger at 3:47.  Zach Lunde scores from Brent Nelson and Craig Sherwood at 2:50.  And Zach Lunde completes the hattrick scoring again at .28 from Brent Nelson and Steven Epprecht.  Weninger has playmaker and a goal on the afternoon as well.

CYHO Opens up early up 3-0 but ends up tied with Columbus #411

Michael Lange scores from Keigan Mennetti and Brent Nelson at 8:18 of the first period.  Greg Oneacre scores from Steven Epprecht at 3:58 on the power-play.  Matt O'Hearn scores assisted by Kyle Weninger and Steven Epprecht at 5:01 of the second period.  Then after 4 Columbus goals, Michael Lange scores from Zach Lunde and Peter Noble.  Michael Lange scores again 20 seconds later at 7:43 of the 3rd putting CYHO back on top by a goal, assisted by Zach Lunde and Kyle Weninger.  With .35 left in the game Columbus ties the game with 6 skaters and pressure in the fishermen end.

The Fishermen have best outing yet vs. one of the top Bantam AA teams in the State, Gilmour #401 losing 4-1

The Gilmour Lancers #401 team is expected to be one of the strongest Bantam AA teams in the State Tournament.  If not for a weak start in the first 1/2 of the 1st period the CYHO fishermen would have tied the formidable Lancers.  This was a very good showing for a much younger and physically smaller Bantam team that CYHO fielded this season.  Gilmour had 3 goals by 5:45 of the 1st period.  The CYHO team had moments of brilliance with both teams getting 10 shots off in the second period.  Gilmour scored one goal (on power-play) in the second period.  CYHO scored the only goal in the third period again tying shots 6-6.  Lucas Gsellman scores from Peter Noble on the power-play at .51 in the third period.

Michael Lange has the only goal unassisted in 1-1 tie vs. Canton/Akron in league play January 22nd.  Logan Gsellman has a nice night in net, fending off a few one on 0 breakaways including one in the last few seconds of the game also stopping 25 shots.

CYHO/Euclid #441 BEATS UNDEFEATED CLEVELAND SKATING CLUB 6-2  (December 13th)
CYHO/Euclid #441 brought its league record to 3-2-1 with a huge win over Cleveland Skating Club.  After a 2-2 first two period tie--the Bantam A-1 squad scored 4 unanswered 3rd period goals.  Both goalies faced 21 shots as Logan Gsellman battled in the third period keeping shots out of the net.  All forwards and defensemen it seems have turned the corner in fighting out the third period to win a game.  Kyle Weninger ties up the game at 1 a piece assisted by Matt O'Hearn and Peter Noble at 1:55 of the first period.  Michael Lange ties the game up again at 7:33 of the second period 2-2 assisted by Peter Noble.  Zach Lunde scores at 13:33 from Kyle Weninger and Matt O'Hearn, as Lunde knocked the puck out of the air and banged it in on the ice.  Kyle Weninger scores at 12:40 of the 3rd assisted by Craig Sherwood.  Matt O'Hearn scores at 8:26 assisted by Kyle Weninger while short handed.  Brent Nelson scores from Kyle Weninger and Peter Noble at 2:00 leaving the game 6-2 CYHO/Euclid #441!  Weninger has 5 points on the night including a playmaker-3 assists.

CYHO/Euclid #441 gets first shut-out in A-1 league play vs. Mentor winning 2-0
The fishermen again looked good in the third period outshooting the Cardinals 14 to 4 in the third period.  Logan Gsellman receives his first league game shut-out of the season.  Total shots were 28 to 20.  Peter Noble has a big scoring game getting both goals assisted by Greg Oneacre on the first and Keigan Mennetti and David Stolz on the second.  The team buckled down in the third period with a 0-0 score but kept the pressure in the Mentor end most of the time.

CYHO jumped on the Sylvania Leafs early winning the first game 6-2, on Dec. 3rd
After a Leaf's goal Peter Noble scores assisted by Lucas Gsellman and Paul Steinle.  Paul Seinle scores with 31 seconds left in the second period assisted by Peter Noble.  Kyle Weninger scores from Matt O'Hearn at 12:23 of the 3rd.  Zach Lunde scores from Peter Noble and Michael Lange at 5:33.  Peter Noble scores on the power-play from Matt O'Hearn at 4:13.  And after another Leaf's goal, Matt O'Hearn scores from Peter Noble with 1:34 left in the game.

After a flat start CYHO plays strong 3rd period losing 3-4 to Sylvania
The coach takes the blame for the loss as players got to play different positions for the first 1/2 of the game.  Players were given the opportunity to see the ice from a different perspective in the second game, which I believe helps with their overall development---maybe a defensemen sees--"hey its hard to score and also backcheck."  Maybe a forward sees--"its not so easy skating backwards and playing the body and keeping opponents from getting easy goals in front of the net."  After putting players back in their more regular positions they scored 2 third period goals and let none in.  1st period goal was scored by Kyle Weninger assisted by Brent Nelson and Jeremy Todd.  Kyle Weninger scores again in the third period assisted by Lucas Gsellman and Logan Gsellman (goalie).  Peter Noble scores from Jeremy Todd and Kyle Weninger with 5:59 left to play leaving the score 3-4.

CYHO/Euclid #441 has weak third period losing league game to Akr/Canton by a goal
Geo Chapman scores assisted by Greg Oneacre and Kyle Weninger at 12:39 of the first period.  Paul Steinle scores assisted by David Stolz and Michael Lange at 9:55 of the 1st.  After 3 Akron/Canton goals--two so far in the third period, Matt O'Hearn scores assisted by Kyle Weninger and Lucas Gsellman while short-handed tying the game 3-3.  Akron/Canton scores again at 4:59 to go up and holds the lead to a 3-4 loss for CYHO/Euclid #441.
