TEAM
JAM CONNECTION
He was
the leading scorer in the city, had just finished his senior year of
high school and was still a year away from graduating.
When Dante Booker introduced them to each other one day at Akron East
HS, they had no idea that the road they were about to travel together
would . . . (more)
GREG'S
TESTIMONY
It
was my redshirt senior year and things weren't going well at
all.
I lost the previous year to a foot injury, plus had some legal
issues. Now things were going from bad to worse because of my
attitude and Coach Greg Marshall talked about kicking me off
the team.
John Saucier and I first met in high school
through a mutual friend (Dante Booker - Auburn, NFL), and I soon
started playing for TEAM JAM's AAU basketball team.
Eventually, John and TEAM JAM helped turn my life around by helping me
get to a Christian high school for my last year. It was a big
change because of the different culture, the location and the
Christianity. But it improved every area of my life.
After that I went to two different junior colleges before transferring
to Division I
Winthrop. My first year there I was my team's
leading scorer, First Team All-Conference and MVP of the
Conference Tournament . . . leading us to the NCAA tournament.
During the next season, while I was hurt, John was explaining to
me that God was trying to get my attention. He called it a
"spiritual injury" that God was using to get me to spend
more time with Him. In spite of other problems, I was avoiding
God. And now, with no more time left in
my college career to make mistakes, the head coach and I weren't
getting along at all.
John had been in touch
with the coaches and knew what was going on. He surprised me
with a visit to the college a few games into the season. He
brought down a few other TEAM JAM people that I knew all the
way from Ohio to S.C. and they all
sat in the coach's office and went over what was going on.
It was hard to sit through, but they all told me how much they
believed in me and how much I was throwing my future away and God's
plan to better my life.
Then John took me aside. He didn't
say much and it was kind of emotional because of all that we had
been through together. There wasn't much more to be said. He
reminded me of all the sacrifices that had been made to get me to
this point, and that they hadn't been made so that I could blow it
and waste all their effort.
There wasn't anything else that
needed to be said except that it was time for me to be serious
about God, let Him be my Savior, and give Him an honest effort to
doing things God's way instead of mine. From that point on my
season was different, my life was different and I knew for sure
that Christ was my Savior . . . . just like I had known I needed to
be for a long time. My life really hasn't been the same
since !!!

playing in New Zealand for the Waikato Titans. Recognized as
the most dominant player in the NBL Spring League, Greg put up the

has also been active in camps and interaction with the local

He
has now been the featured player on the eurobasket.com version of
the New Zealand league web page for two weeks in a

the latest stats don't show it yet, Greg is now the second leading
scorer in the league with 252 points in 11 games (23.0) and 11.7
rebounds a game (third best). He is shooting 60% from the

KTP lost
their final game of the season by two points 105-103, but Greg went out
with a flurry. Scoring 30 points, including 10 of 11 from the free
throw line, and adding 9 rebounds, and only one turnover, he accounted for
most of his team's production. Teammate James Head added 31 points
and 4 rebounds.
KTP was beaten badly on the boards 42-20, but still managed to shoot more
from the field and the line. Defensively, they just weren't able to
stop PuHu, who won their first bronze medal. KTP finished in fourth.
LEWIS
RISES TO CHALLENGE
With the
series on the line against BC, Greg rose to the occasion with a 27 pt., 11
reb. game in an effort to stave off elimination. It wasn't enough,
however, and KTP was forced into the Bronze medal series with their close
loss.
KTP then lost the first game of their consolation series against PuHU
107-92. Greg and American teammate James Head, grabbed all but three
of KTP's rebounds. Greg shot 75% from the field while scoring 25
pts., grabbing 14 rebounds, and making 6 steals. HE is still second
among all playoff performers in per game rebounds with 11.0. He is
also seventh in scoring during the playoffs at 21.5. Even more
amazing is the fact that all of his scoring comes during the flow of the
game, as there are no plays designed for the Americans on KTP team.
Greg will be arriving back in the states by the April 4-5th weekend.
Look for him to show up again in the United States Basketball League in
mid-April.
PLAY-OFF
HEAT IS ON! - Mar. 14, 2003 -
by Pekka Konttinen
MARCH 14.
1ST ROUND OF SM-LEAGUE PLAYOFF GAMES
Quarrter-Finals:
Home teams were strong at first round of
SM-League quarter-final games on friday.Lot of points were seen in Kotka,
where home team KTP scored as much as 120 points against visitor BC Jyväskylä.
KTP's new american forward James
Head (199-G/F-75, agent: Mc
Intyre Frank, college: E.Michigan)
showed that he is able to play in several positions (29 points, 3.p
5/8) another american Greg
Lewis (198-F-, college: Winthrop)
was even more effective (30 points).BC Jyväskylä's lightning quick guard
Petri
Virtanen (184-G-80, agent: Veromejus
Mindaugas) tried to keep his team in the game, but tonight KTP's
offence was solid as a rock. Kouvot almost surprised Honka in Espoo,
but Honka's american duo Grant & Cross finally turned the game to home
team with their 3 point shots. PuHu beated Vilpas at home as expected and
regular season winner Kataja didn't let LrNMKY to suprise them. Next games
will be played tomorrow (on saturday 15.3)
Kataja
- LrNMKY 76-68 (36-32) Kataja leads series 1-0
Honka -
Kouvot 69-65 (27-38) Honka leads series 1-0
PuHu -
Vilpas 90-80 (50-43) PuHu leads series 1-0
KTP - BC
Jyväskylä 120-101 (57-54) KTP leads series 1-0
LEWIS
LEADING KTP OF FINLAND
After a short
stint with Greenville, Greg was picked up at the beginning of February by
the strong KTP club in the first division in Finland. In the last
thirteen games of the season, Greg averaged a little over 20 points and
9.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 55% from the field. Playing
out of position due to injuries to his teammates, Greg still continues to
out-rebound bigger opponents.
Greg's first
game in Finland was a "double-double" (25 pts. and 12 rebs.),
and he has continued to have big games including 30 pts. in a big win over
a second place rival, vaulting KTP into third place, and 30 pts. and 8
rebs. in his first playoff game. KTP won their first playoff series
to make it into the "Final Four" of Finland, with
Greg scoring 25 pts. and grabbing 16 rebs. in the decisive game 5, one
point win, over BC. After 6 playoff games, Greg was scoring
20 pts. a game and was second among all playoff participants with rebounds
per game at 10.8.
