LEADERSHIP (PART 2 of 4)
OUR POTENTIAL DOWNFALL Leadership responsibilities “stretch you. We become overcommitted. You will be criticized unfairly. You will be tired. Satan will attack you.
This is a spiritual battle we all face daily. Expect and prepare for these personal attacks with spiritual defenses rather than emotions and words. .
Your only defense comes
from an improved Prayer life. A. PRAY TO PROTECT YOURSELF.
1. Focus your Bible
Reading on Christ’s example of ministry (John
5) 2. Make a prayer card with your own family’s names and the names of
specific coaches
and players on your team.(Keep the list in your 3. Confess Sin / Surrender Daily to God. “Get right” daily (I John 1:9)
4.
Recognize battles as spiritual not personal – Pray through them. 5. Model these same efforts to another potential leader.
B. PRAY TO PREPARE YOURSELF. Dramatic life moments are opportunities to improve our lives . or destroy them. It is our choice to overcome and also to initiate efforts with others who need help. (Read Romans 8:28)
That is why we need to pray AHEAD of time for wisdom and strength for these life changing moments in our life AND the lives of those we lead. . 1. When a relationship BREAKS UP. 2. When an individual gets MARRIED. 3. When a child is BORN. 4. When there is a major HEALTH ISSUE or even DEATH 5. When there is a major ACCOMPLISHMENT / or FAILURE. 6. When there is a GEOGRAPHICAL change. 7. When there is an OCCUPATIONAL change.
It requires unselfishness. It requires you to pray FIRST, and help SECOND.
It requires you to
practice GOD’S ADVICE, not your own.
You are God’s visual example of HIS personal interest in THEIR lives.
You are NOT God and the answer to their problems … HE is. HE wants to be their Lord, Savior and Provider rather than US.

LEADERSHIP (PART 3 OF 4) KEYS TO RELATIONSHIP BUILDING
1.. Pray for specific people 2. Observe/Learn needs, milestones, accomplishments, love language. 3. Build Relationships through the art of asking questions/mtg needs, rather than talking about yourself. 4. Strive to make 7 significant efforts/experiences with others. (call, gifts, pray with, visit, meet needs, be thoughtful, go somewhere with) 5 Assist in the overall development of their career and as a human being.
Imitate Christ’s “People” Skills (Read John 5) 1. He initiates contact. - On earth, he went where the people were, even though He was criticized for it. 2. He was a student of other people. He knew their needs. 3. He met needs as soon as he knew about them. (Big AND small) 4. He asked questions. 5. He told stories so people could remember the lessons he taught. 6. HIS actions MOTIVATED ACTION from those He met. They reacted because of His compassion and without forcing or obligating. 7. He did NOT seek personal gain. His greatest gain was in helping all around Him benefit.
What we know about the social skills of followers (Isaiah 53:6) 1. They are self-absorbed, selfish, consumed with their own lives. 2. They enjoy talking about themselves. 3. They really aren’t that interested in you or your success. 4. They are always “busy” but always have time for pleasure. 5. They have needs . . . physical, emotional, spiritual and financial. 6. They are not naturally trusting of strangers who talk about God. 7. They don’t appreciate people asking questions that are too personal. 8. They are afraid of embarrassing themselves and becoming vulnerable.
Personal relationships are usually established within 7 significant experiences with each other. But there is only ONE OPPORTUNITY to make a first impression that impacts all your future efforts.
SPIRITUAL LEADERS empower others to experience personal benefit. WORLDLY LEADERS take advantage of others for their own benefit. These people have the “title” but not the qualifications of leadership.
BEGINNING THE LEADERSHIP WALK1. Smile. Be approachable. 2. Pray for others. 3. Let people see you talking to younger players/people. 4. Do simple random acts of kindness. 5. Be seen in the daylight hours / not the night. 6. Develop a daily routine that involves helping others – DAILY. 7. Serve. Do the undesirable things. 8. Analyze why people “follow” you and the TRUE benefit to them.
9.
Determine the TRUE needs of those you care about most – starting 10. Don’t make fun of others - be secure enough to poke fun at yourself. Be open and honest about yourself. There must be a certain amount of vulnerability on your part to assist others in letting their guard down.

LEADERSHIP (Part 4 of 4) TRUE LEADERS . . . . . SERVE.
THE ULTIMATE PRIVILEGE OF LEADERSHIP IS THE OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE.
These normally undesirable acts are OUR PRIVILEGE. 1. Providing food, shelter and protection for family. 2. Cleaning up after others. 3. Helping others succeed in their career. 4. Helping others succeed financially. 5. Helping others succeed academically. 6. Helping others grow spiritually. 7. Being taken advantage of. 8. Spending money on the needs of strangers. 9. Listening to the concerns of acquaintances or strangers. 10. Being quiet in our defense when others do not assist us.
Leaders are people who respond when GOD touches their heart to help someone
else sacrificially . . . NOT when man gives him a title. DEFINITION OF SUCCESS
Success is serving God with all my resources – my time, my possessions, my discipline, my lifestyle, and my mouth.
Success is NOT what I can accomplish for myself.
My life can become successful when I am consumed with getting to know Christ better and sharing what I learn about Him with other people.
The ultimate example of success is simply being faithful and obedient to Jesus Christ. We are to make ourselves available to HIM to accomplish HIS agenda. Personal benefit, gain, rewards or feelings are irrelevant. Satisfaction and fulfillment comes from our knowledge that we were obedient to Him each day. (I Timothy 6:6) Everything else will ultimately disappoint us and waste our lives. (Read the book of Ecclesiastes).
John 12:25-26 – The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.
Never mistake where that “honor” will take place. Like Matthew 6 describes – if we seek our honor in this world, that’s the only place we will have it.
Please your audience of ONE – Jesus Christ. Be wise enough to wait for your reward in Heaven, rather than stealing it for earth. Expect to never be recognized or rewarded for this mindset until you see God himself at His throne someday. But look forward to experiencing satisfaction when you see others imitate your example.
