DSian in a high
school game for Akron St. V - St. Mary
BACKGROUND
I
Sian and Dru Joyce III can trace their
roots all the way back to the church nursery at the House of the Lord
in Akron. Sian's parents, Lee and Debra have always been active in the
ministry there at the church and teamed up with Dru Joyce II (Dru
III's father) to teach the youth in Sunday School and youth
group. Those junior high years are when these young men came to
trust Christ as their Savior. Sian led Willie McGee down to the
altar in 7th grade to help him accept Christ. Dru made his committment
in Junior High (see his story on his site) and LeBron during his 8th
grade year.
Sian
also grew up attending Chapel Hill Christian School from Pre-k through
6 grade and then Arlington Christian School for the middle school
years

IT'S MY
TURN
-the
rest of the story
After a
national championship in 2003, Dru
Joyce III and Romeo Travis
went on to have an immediate impact on Akron U.'s basketball
team and LeBron went on to become the NBA's rookie of the
year. Sitting just out of the spotlight for a year was
Sian. But after a year in which he turned heads as a scout
team member and then as an impact player in Spring drills, we
are about to see a fourth member of this group step on the
stage.
Though it
may seem hard to believe, there is so much more to the story on
the basketball players from Akron St. Vincent - St. Mary High
School, than what has been told. Like the story behind
Dwight Howard, this year's top high school player, these
young men were raised by God-honoring parents and/or
coaches. Prayer, youth group meetings, chapels and lunch
time devotional times at school have played a huge part in their
development.
High
profile athletes have been making headlines for years talking
about God early in their career and then falling prey to the
"rewards" of success. Ohio State has a Christian
head coach in Jim Tressell who is faithful in his walk and has
enabled Athletes in Action to have a thriving ministry among the
athletes on the team. Still, there have been a large number of
criminal, drunken or inappropriate activities among the
athletes. Though we focus on the battle on the football
field, the greater war is taking place on weekend nights in the
dorms and clubs on campus . . .
Now it's
Sian's turn to channel his tremendous ability to performance on
the field and personal discipline off the field. Add to
that the many privileges he and his friends are able to enjoy
with LeBron and you can only imagine what may lie
ahead.
His
parents, his coaches and those of us here at TEAM JAM have
worked hard to prepare him for this moment. God will see
fit to use him in mighty ways . . . . but now it's HIS
TURN to handle the pressure, the temptation and the
expectations.

THE
TEAM JAM CONNECTION Sian's
high school and AAU coach, Dru Joyce II, has worked with the youth
department at the House of the Lord Church for many years. Those
years coincided with the same years that TEAM JAM has been in
existence. Dru and John Saucier teamed up over the years to mentor
other House of the Lord student/athletes like Karel Smith (Penn St. U.
fb) and David Walker (Ohio U. fb). The friendship that developed
also resulted in Lee Cotton (Sian's older brother) playing for some TEAM
JAM basketball teams, our speaking at a retreat, Divine Soldiers
concerts and ultimately with John doing frequent devotionals for the
Akron St. Vincent - St. Mary basketball team.
