OLD NEWS / ACTIVE FAITH
APRIL 5, 2003
Several Major League Baseball players arranged for teammates to see The Passion during spring training by renting out a movie theater or by handing out free tickets. They include: New York Mets pitcher Braden Looper, Mike Matheny of the St. Louis Cardinals, Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz and Houston Astros outfielder Lance Berkman who had help from owner Drayton McLane, a Southern Baptist deacon.

CJ Nitkowski, one of the teammates of J.D. and Tim Drew when they were iin Atlanta, has quite a story about God's work in his life is working to get a spot in the Atlanta Braves. The pitcher credits getting cut from the Houston Astros 2 years ago with turning him back to God. The very day he was released by the Astros, he was at home sulking and heard the noises of his toddler drowning in the backyard swimming pool. The realization that he would not have been there to save his son if he had not been cut helped him reestablish his Christian faith. Nitkowski no longer uses his website to complain, but as a way to tell others about his faith. (The above two reports were a result of reading the GoForth website)

Franco defends himself: One day after pointing his finger at former Pirate teammate Barry Bonds, Andy Van Slyke said he believed Braves first baseman Julio Franco was using steroids.

"Julio Franco is 46 years old. I've got to believe he's on it," Van Slyke told host Rick Barry on San Francisco radio station KNBR on Wednesday night.
Franco, a devout Christian who actually won't turn 46 years old until August, seemed to be amused by Van Slyke's accusation.

"Andy Van Slyke is right," Franco said. "I'm on the best juice there is. I'm juiced up every day, and the name of my juice is Jesus. I'm on His power, His wisdom, His understanding. ... Next time you talk to him, tell him the steroid I'm on is Jesus of Nazareth."

2004 REVISITED
Three years ago Tim Drew was in Buffalo, assisting TEAM JAM in ministry. Tim was traded back then and has since been faithful in ministering to his teammates.  When Tim led Jason to Christ while playing for Richmond, how could we have anticipated everything coming full circle once Jason surprisingly ended up being acquired by Buffalo. Jason is now starting in left field with the Minnesota Twins/
