Andy McCollum of the World Champion St. Louis Rams,
with several participants at Ricky's Camp.

Ricky's camp met with great success Saturday and Sunday, July 15th and 16th.  Sponsored by  Akron's Recreation Department, the camp saw approximately 100 young people benefitted from this free camp, representing youth of all ages.  We would like to compliment the City of Akron and Ricky for the work that they did with this camp.  TEAM JAM helped provide some of the volunteers, but otherwise, all the work was done by Ricky and the Recreation Department.
We also were impressed with the response of so many area role models who volunteered their time to coach.  There were so many,  unfortunately a few names might be omitted, but here is a quick run down on some of those involved.
Andy McCollum - Center for the St. Louis Rams
Reggie Langhorne - former receiver for the Cleveland Browns
Robert Davis - North American Boxing Federation Hvywt. Boxing Champ
Darryl McMurray - U. of Pittsburgh football
Dion and Brandon Hayes - U. of Pittsburgh football.
Shane Ladner - Akron U. football, pro prospect.
Demetrius Harris - Walsh U. All-American running back., pro prospect

Tim Murphy - Akron Buchtel running back sensation

Ricky Powers

Ricky Powers shown here at the Cleveland Browns training camp in 1996.

Ricky is a graduate of both Akron Buchtel HS and the University of Michigan.  While at Akron Buchtel, he led his football team to back to back state championships as well as being named a high school All-American.  The Dallas Morning News tabbed Ricky the top running back in the country and both Ohio State and the University of Michigan pursued Ricky in an intense recruiting battle won by Michigan.   Ricky quickly became a starter and was recognized as the top freshman in the Big Ten.

Later, Ricky went on to play professionally with the Detroit Lions and the Cleveland Browns.  He also played in the last game in Cleveland Stadium with the original Browns franchise.

Since then Ricky has also played in the NFL Europe League as well as the Spring Football League this past year.  Some additional information on his accomplishments have been included through related links at the bottom of this page.

This is the second year that Ricky has organized this camp for Akron area youth.
