DERRICK TARVER MEDICALLY CLEARED TO PLAY FOR AKRON

Junior Derrick Tarver has been cleared to play by doctors and might start practicing Saturday.  After a consultation Wednesday at Cleveland Clinic, Tarver has been given the green light by doctors to start practicing.  He will receive regular check-ups during the season and is awaiting paperwork to be completed by the university to start practice.

The Akron native is in his first year with the Zips after transferring from City College of San Francisco. He had been diagnosed with a genetic heart defect and underwent preventative surgery. Further tests have shown no signs of the defect that caused his twin brother Darren to retire from basketball at George Mason U.

TARVER COMMITS TO AKRON U.

Despite being heavily recruited by such schools as Texas, Fresno State, Cincinnati, South Florida, Tulane, Ohio State and Alabama, Derrick Tarver has made a verbal commitment to Akron of the Mid-American Conference.  Now at San Francisco CC, the 6-4 shooting guard was a second-team NJCAA All-American at Howard (TX) JC last season, where he averaged 28.3 points and 4.9 rebounds as a freshman. He shot 56.1% from the field and 45.4% from beyond the arc and was named MVP of the WJCAC Conference.

Tarver, whose brother Darren was a first team All-American and is now at George Mason, was #4 in the preseason ranking of the nation's JUCO shooting guards by The Sporting News.

GEORGE MASON'S DARREN TARVER DISCHARGED, CAREER OVER

May 16, 2002
Sportsticker

FAIRFAX, Virginia (Ticker) -- George Mason University junior guard Darren Tarver, who had a heart attack a week ago, was discharged from the hospital Thursday. His playing career is over.

Tarver, 21, experienced cardiac arrest due to heart arrythmia while taking a break during a pick-up game on campus last Thursday. A professor began CPR and Fairfax emergency personnel responded within minutes, resuscitating Tarver before he was taken to INOVA Fairfax Hospital.

The 2001 Junior College Player of the Year, Tarver underwent a battery of tests Monday and Tuesday that determined that he needs a defibrillator -- similar to a pacemaker -- implanted in his shoulder. The combination of his condition and the defibrillator will prevent him from playing high-level intercollegiate athletics.

GMU will honor Tarver's athletic scholarship. His twin brother, Derrick, underwent a series of tests Thursday to determine if he has a similar problem.

"I am happy to be alive and I'm looking forward to beginning the next phase of my life, which I hope will include coaching basketball," Tarver said.

The 6-3, 195-pound Tarver averaged 16.7 points in each of his two seasons at Wabash Valley Community College in Illinois, leading the school to the 2001 NJCAA Division I championship. At George Mason, he averaged 18 points in three games before suffering a stress fracture in his left foot and taking a medical redshirt season.
