BACKGROUND STORY
For three seasons, Alex was a key figure on Akron U's basketball season. They had won the conference and qualified for the NCAA tournament two straight years. The day after the Zips clinched the MAC regular season title during a season in which they cracked the Top 25 in the country, Alex was arrested for intrastate drug trafficking. It was also the day before their end of the year rivalry game with Kent State. Akron found a way to bounce back, win the MAC tournament, and qualify for the NCAA tourney again. But they were at a huge disadvantage against VCU's vaunted press. Their season ended in the first round. Alex's drug use and criminal decision devastated his own life, his team and especially his senior teammates. Many were bitter, Alex was alone in a jail cell watching his team on tv and he also was facing the possibility of years in prison. There seemed to be no hope in any area of his life. But thats when the story actually BEGAN. The second chance God has given Alex in the process of the past year thru the courts and at West Georgia has been merciful to say the least. It began when Alex was visited by 80 yr old Jim Beck at Summit County Jail the day after the arrest. Jim is a former Akron U player and volunteer chaplain. Jim counseled and shared Bible verses with Alex during the visit, at which point, Alex surrendered his life to Christ.. The goal was just to get his life back together and admit that he was wrong with the decisions that he was making in his life. When Jim suggested that God could restore ALL of Alex’ life, including some day playing basketball again, Alex responded that he thought that it was too late for that and probably impossible. In other words, Alex’ top reason for turning to God was because he needed to, NOT because he thought that basketball could be salvaged. As God often does, He blessed Alex with both salvation AND a second chance at basketball. The journey is not over yet! Like all of us, Alex's life could quickly turn south again if he turns his back on God or is distracted by old influences. Being young, and talented, the journey will be more challenging than most - and need true friends interested in his pursuit of God above all else. |
