JEFF BIANCHIEd. note: While Shawn Lazarus and John Saucier were minor league baseball chaplains with the Cleveland Indians farm teams, they also ministered to several players from other teams. Ben Zobrist (Houston Astros system, currently with Chicago Cubs), introduced us by phone to Cody Strait (KC Royals system). When Shawn was visiting the Indians single A team in Kinston, NC, Cody was also there - having recently been traded to the Royals organization - and conveniently available for Shawn to meet. Cody, in turn, introduced Shawn to new teammate Jeff Bianchi. Jeff was already a strong believer and was interested in having our help in producing a testimony card. The following story is on the back of his card and is available for free upon request.
Before committing myself to Christ, my life consisted of being a “nice guy”. I went to church and made good decisions. I thought that was good enough to get me into heaven. However, it wasn’t until my freshman year of high school my life began to change. It was the last day of a camp retreat that I accepted the Lord into my heart. I realized I was a sinner and couldn’t work my way into heaven. I asked the Lord to forgive me of my sins and to become the leader of my life, my Savior. Titus 3:5 says, “He saved us, not because of the good things we did, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins and gave us new life through the Holy Spirit.” A huge burden is now lifted off my shoulders. I am living for the glory of God and not my own. I’ve come to know and realize that it’s not just about being a good person and doing good deeds. Those qualities are great, but Jesus is the only one who can save me from my sins. Today, I have a one on one relationship with God and am using him as the centerpiece of my life. I am constantly putting my trust in the Lord. Being a professional baseball player can be very challenging, but with the Lord on my team I can make it through anything.
